For years, the Kansas City Royals have been a laughingstock in the MLB. In fact, before this season, they hadn’t been to the postseason in 29 years. Well the Royals not only made the playoffs this year, but they also swept the Los Angeles Angels in the AL Divisional Series.
The Wild Card Royals completed their 3-0 sweep of the Angels thanks to a bases-clearing double by Alex Gordon, and home runs by Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas. With the Kansas City bats going, they cruised to an 8-3 victory and will face the Baltimore Orioles, who are fresh off a sweep of Detroit.
As for Los Angeles, this was a bitter end to what was such a promising season. They finished with the league’s best record at 98-64, but became just the second team since the divisional era began (1969) to get swept out of the postseason. The Angels were also the MLB’s highest-scoring team, however, this was hard to tell as they mustered just six runs in three games against the Royals. In Game 3, they were largely punchless outside of homers by Mike Trout and Albert Pujols.
That’s not to say that Los Angeles didn’t put in a good effort throughout the series, though. They pushed Kansas City to two 11-inning games before being dominated away from home. The final game started well for LA with Mike Trout’s home run giving them a 1-0 lead. But Angels starter C.J. Wilson got into trouble early on. The $16 million man surrendered a two-out, bases-loaded double to Gordon that gave the Royals a 3-1 lead. With nothing to lose, LA manager Mike Scioscia quickly went to the bullpen, but relievers couldn’t cool off the KC bats either.
Now Kansas City moves on to face Baltimore in the American League Championship Series. Both teams swept their opponents, so it’s hard to call who’s the favorite on the betting lines. The Royals have really strong pitching while Baltimore can swing for the fences, as they showed by hitting 211 home runs this season.
