Anderson Silva Wants Conor McGregor Fight

anderson-silva-conor-mcgregorAnderson Silva hasn’t fared too well in his recent UFC matches. However, the once dominant middleweight is still one of the biggest names in mixed martial arts. And he recently urged UFC President Dana White to set up a high-profile match between him and Conor McGregor.

This would be a catchweight bout, given that Silva normally fights as a middleweight and McGregor fights as a lightweight. McGregor is coming off a loss against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, where he was trying to reclaim his lightweight belt that was stripped for inactivity.

This fight was marred by a post-fight brawl, which happened due to bad blood that’d been brewing for quite some time between the two camps. McGregor is interested in a rematch with Khabib, but he might not get one immediately.

Can Silva Still Beat the Best?

Silva is undoubtedly one of the best pound for pound fighters in UFC history. At one point, he was consistently at the top of these rankings while holding the middleweight title for seven years from 2006 to 2013.

anderson-silva-mcgregorBut as mentioned before, “The Spider” has fallen off his game in recent years. The 43-year-old is no longer considered an elite title contender. Nevertheless, he hasn’t lost the same confidence he had in his prime.

“I’m just waiting. I accept the challenge of Conor,” he told TMZ. “I think Dana needs to think about this.

“It’s two big guys in this sport, two big names. Two big legends and why not? It’s not about money, Conor. It’s about a martial arts challenge.”

What Would Be the Catchweight?

Silva proposes that 180 pounds would be a good compromise between himself and McGregor. This might work for the latter, who usually comes into his lightweight fights quite a bit heavier than 155 pounds after weigh-ins.

“I think 180 [pounds] for me is good. I think for Conor, too. Because that’s a superfight. It’s not about weight class,” Silva explained.

“I don’t believe Conor would win [against Khabib]. Definitely not. In a rematch, I don’t believe that. I believe Conor needs to fight with me. That’s a good fight.”

Will This Fight Happen?

conor-mcgregor-training-mayweatherDuring the build-up to his bout against Khabib, McGregor said that Silva was a “legend in the game.” This shows that he obviously has great respect for the former middleweight champion.

But can mere respect lead to a fight between the two?

Silva would need to pull off a huge win or two before coming into this conversation. He’s no longer the same draw that he was several years ago and is considered on the downside of his career. However, the Spider is also a very skilled fighter who’s still capable of a big win.

The key issue, though, might come down to money. McGregor has made $100 million and $50 million in his last two fights against Floyd Mayweather (boxing) and Khabib, respectively.

He’s not going to fight somebody just because he thinks they’re a legend. And a Silva-McGregor matchup doesn’t seem like it’d generate the same type of pay-per-views as the Mayweather or Nurmagomedov matches.

Another issue is that a McGregor win over Silva wouldn’t further his career. He likely needs a victory over a high-profile opponent to face Khabib again, assuming he doesn’t get a rematch right away.

Regardless, a fight between Silva and McGregor would be entertaining. It just doesn’t seem likely to happen.

Khabib Nurmagomedov Wants to Fight Floyd Mayweather

khabib-mayweather-1Khabib Nurmagomedov is still riding high on his UFC 229 victory over Conor McGregor. However, he already appears focused on the future and recently called out undefeated and recently unretired boxer Floyd Mayweather.

Nurmagomedov did this while standing ringside with Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. With his arm around Ellerbe, Khabib challenged Mayweather to a fight.

“Hey, let’s go, Floyd. We have to fight now. 50-0 vs. 27-0. Two guys never lose. Let’s go. Why not?

“Because in the jungle, only one king. Only one king. Of course, I am the king because he cannot drop McGregor but I drop him easily. Let’s go!”

Khabib says it all, because both athletes are undefeated in their respective sports. This alone would make a fight between the two a historic occasion.

Is there Any Possibility of Nurmagomedov vs. Mayweather?

bernard-hopkins-floyd-mayweatherIt’s theoretically possible that Khabib and Mayweather could meet in the future at some point. However, there are some big hurdles to overcome before this happens.

Namely, Khabib is suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission after his post-match brawl with McGregor’s team at UFC 229. The UFC is also holding his $2 million purse, which caused Nurmagomedov to threaten to break his contract with the world’s biggest mixed martial arts promotion.

It’s unclear whether Khabib would actually leave the organization that’s helped make him a star. However, he might do so when considering the type of money he can earn from boxing against Mayweather.

What would Sell a Khabib vs. Mayweather Fight?

Khabib makes a very interesting opponent for Mayweather for a few reasons. First off, Nurmagomedov would become the second MMA fighter besides McGregor to cross over into boxing in order to face “Money.”

Secondly, Khabib is the first fighter to ever knock down McGregor with a punch in competition. Even Mayweather – who has far more boxing experience than Nurmagomedov – failed to put Mcgregor on the canvas.

Building fights is all about hype. And the fact that Khabib was able to knock down McGregor with a stiff right hand while Mayweather couldn’t would make for some interesting pre-fight theatrics.

Finally, the simple fact that Money is interested in this matchup sells the deal. Mayweather said that he would be willing to face Khabib for the right price.

Ramifications of a Bout between Money and Khabib

khabib-mayweatherThe boxing match between Mayweather and McGregor is the second biggest pay-per-view event of all time. It’s doubtful that Nurmagomedov and Mayweather would match this.

After all, Khabib hasn’t generated quite the same publicity throughout his career as McGregor. But it would definitely be another giant fighting event.

However, it’s worth keeping in mind that Mayweather came out of retirement in order to face Manny Pacquiao at some point in 2019. Therefore, he needs to dispatch Pacquiao – something he did in 2015 – in order to keep the bout with Khabib attractive.

It’s definitely conceivable that he can once again beat Pacquiao and keep his perfect 50-0 record untarnished. That would set up another big payday with Khabib if everything falls into place.

Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov: Lightweight Title Fight at UFC 229

Khabib-Nurmagomedov-Mcgregor-1Conor McGregor will return to mixed martial arts this October. UFC president Dana White made the announcement during a press conference for the fall fight schedule.

Following the event, White surprised viewers with a video explaining that lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov will defend his championship against McGregor. The fight will take place at UFC 229, held on October 6 at Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.

This is widely expected to become the most-lucrative UFC fight in history. McGregor, who’s become an international star after boxing Floyd Mayweather, may help the promotion achieve 2 million pay-per-views for the first time ever.

Nurmagomedov will also help build the event, because he’s currently undefeated at 26-0.

McGregor Is Eligible to Return after Misdemeanor Guilty Plea

McGregor has already created some buildup to this fight after a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge in New York. Prior to UFC 223 in Brooklyn, the Irishman threw a hand truck at a bus that Nurmagomedov was riding.

Now, the world’s two most dominant lightweight MMA fighters are scheduled to clash. This will be the first time that McGregor has stepped into the Octagon since he beat Eddie Alvarez at Madison Square Garden on November 12, 2016.

This victory gave McGregor the lightweight championship and made him the first UCF fighter to ever hold two weight class titles simultaneously. The 30-year-old already held the featherweight title before his Nov. fight with Alvarez.

The UFC 229 match will also be McGregor’s first fight of any kind since he was knocked out by Mayweather last year. He fought well against a much more experienced opponent and even won some early rounds. But McGregor was finally KO’ed in the ninth round.

As for Nurmagomedov, he’s never lost an MMA bout and now lays claim to the lightweight title that McGregor vacated by leaving to box Mayweather. Nurmagomedov is an expert grappler who looks to keep things on the ground, because he’s not one of the best fighters.

Meanwhile, McGregor is a top UFC striker whose weakness is grappling and Brazilian jujitsu. That said, the Dublin native will be looking to stay upright for most of the bout.

Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor Looks Like a Truly Special Fight

Khabib-Nurmagomedov-Mcgregor-2Aside from the pay-per-view revenue that this bout can generate, it also has the potential to be special in other ways.

First off, look for these two to fling a record amount of trash talk before October 6. Both fighters are accustomed to calling out opponents and trying to verbally humiliate them.

Nurmagomedov was particularly vocal a couple years ago about never getting a title fight. He finally got the championship match and won. Now, he steps into what may be the largest money-generating MMA fight ever.

The talent level of both fighters is off the charts. Again, Nurmagomedov has never lost an MMA fight, which is unprecedented for somebody who’s gone through 26 battles — most of them against strong competition.

McGregor has shown his skills by winning two different UFC belts and surviving a couple of wars against Nate Diaz — another one of the sport’s best athletes. That said, this upcoming fight could be MMA’s version of Joe Fraser vs. Muhammad Ali and 1971.

Ali (31-0) and Frazier (26-0) both entered the 1971 bout undefeated and looking to win the heavyweight championship.

Dubbed the “Fight of the Century,” this event saw Ali box for the first time since serving a three-year ban for refusing to go into the military. He would easily outbox Frazier and win by unanimous decision.

McGregor is similar to Ali, because he never actually lost his lightweight championship belt in the ring. And he was stripped of his featherweight belt after taking an absence to train for the boxing match.

Major Money on the Line

conor-mcgregor-training-mayweatherConor McGregor is easily known as MMA’s top star. He only furthered this reputation by fighting Mayweather in what became the second biggest pay per view ever with 4.3 million sales.

McGregor, whose record is 21-3 overall and 9-1 in the UFC, brings as high a pedigree as any fighter to the table. His only loss came at UFC 196, when he was choked out by Diaz.

This is one of the few fights in any sport that doesn’t need artificial hype. Instead, it will feature two marquee athletes who figure to create an event that’s almost on the same level of Mcgregor vs. Mayweather.

The UFC’s largest live gate was $17.7 million, which occurred when McGregor beat Alvarez at UFC 205 in 2016. The upcoming McGregor-Nurmagomedov bout could become the first UFC event to break $20 million at the live gate.

Most experts see it as a given that UFC 229 will break the promotion’s current PPV record, which is 1.65 million buys for UFC 202. Dana White echoed these sentiments.

“I think when all is said and done, this will be the biggest fight we’ve ever done,” said White. “Conor is one of the biggest superstars in the world and Khabib is the undefeated champion. These are two flat-out killers in their primes squaring off with everything on the line.”

White added, “I hate to talk about what happened in New York, but these guys have a ton of animosity and everybody saw what happened and that’s going to help this, too.

“And what I love is, you hear guys say they will fight anyone, but then it’s after I do this and after that. These two, Conor and Khabib, as soon as it was possible for them to fight, they said, ‘Let’s fight.’ I love that and I think people love that about them.”

Odds on McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov

Khabib-Nurmagomedov-McgregorThe Westgate in Las Vegas opened with Khabib Nurmagomedov as a -180 favorite, while Conor McGregor sits as a +150 underdog. In the world of MMA betting, this line is pretty close.

Nurmagomedov is being favored due to the fact that he’ll have no ring rust. McGregor, meanwhile, must overcome two years of inactivity in the Octagon.

But McGregor is also a very strong fighter who usually comes in much heavier after a weigh-in. Plus, he has the one-punch knockout ability to end the fight quickly.

No matter what happens, White is just excited to make such an event.

“It wasn’t hard putting this fight together at all,” White explained. “Conor is a guy who loves to fight and when he was able to, he said, ‘Let’s do it.’ That’s why he’s such a huge superstar.

“In boxing, everyone knows what fight should be happening. How can they not have made [Anthony] Joshua and [Deontay] Wilder? That’s always what happens. But these two guys, they’re pure fighters and that’s why this is going to be so special.”

Georges St-Pierre Betting Favorite over Conor McGregor

georges-st-pierre-conor-mcgregorGeorges St-Pierre is fresh off a victory over Michael Bisping at UFC 217. And UFC President Dana White has already announced that Robert Whittaker will be GSP’s next opponent. But sportsbooks are offering lines as if St-Pierre were preparing to fight Conor McGregor.

This is the fantasy fight from a fan’s perspective because McGregor is coming off a boxing match against Floyd to Mayweather Jr. And St-Pierre is one of the most-famous fighters in mixed martial arts. They’re also both titleholders, with GSP holding the middleweight belt and McGregor holding the lightweight belt.

The betting line on St-Pierre vs. McGegor is more fantasy than reality right now. But major sportsbooks currently have GSP at -150 and McGregor at +120.

georges-st-pierre-michael-bispingThis sets up St-Pierre to be a favorite if the fight were to take place tomorrow. However, -150 doesn’t put St-Pierre as a massive favorite in the octagon. And it’s nothing like the long odds that McGregor was facing when he boxed Mayweather.

Both fighters are really talented. But if there’s a major reason why St-PIerre has an edge, it’s because the fight would take place at welterweight (170).

St-Pierre (185) and McGregor (155) sit at 30 points apart. McGregor would have to unnaturally gain 15 pounds, while St-Pierre would have the easier cutting process.

Chances of McGregor vs. St-Pierre Happening

Currently, the idea of Conor McGregor and Georges St-Pierre has mainly been something for the media to discuss. St-Pierre hadn’t fought in four years before beating former middleweight champion Michael Bisping. The Montreal native didn’t waste any time shaking off the ring rust, choking out Bisping in the second round.

conor-mcgregor-training-mayweatherNow he’ll fight interim middleweight champion Robert Whittaker some time next year. St-Pierre must win this fight in order to make a potential McGregor match more attractive. And he’s currently favored at sportsbooks (-160) against Whittaker (+130).

St-Pierre is contractually obligated to take on Whittaker next. But according to MMA Weekly, St-Pierre’s coach, Freddie Roach, wants his fighter to drop down in weight in the future. And this would make a McGregor/St-Pierre match far more plausible.

“I think I would like to go to the lower weight division, back to the weight that he’s more comfortable with and more used to,” said Roach. “But the thing is, that might not be available at this point. We do need to work that out with the promoter.”

Who will McGregor Fight Next?

With GSP already having his next fight booked, all eyes are on McGregor and who his next opponent will be. White is supposed to announce who the Irishman will face later this week.

“That’s all this week,” said White. “We’re working on that [UFC 218 main event]. I have to have it done by the end of the week.”

Yahoo Sports reports that money may be holding up McGregor’s return to the UFC.

“(The UFC has) got to entice me now because I came from a billion-dollar fight, so they’ve got to entice me with something,” McGregor said. “I want equity. I want ownership. I want to be true partners in this, similar to the way I was in the Floyd fight. I was a promoter and I was a fighter.”

“That must continue for me to continue. Otherwise, I’ve got many entities and many other interests that I can carry on.”

White also noted that the money McGregor earned in the Mayweather fight is making negotiations more difficult.

“That’s what he wanted to do (fight at UFC 219),” White explained. “But when you make friggin’ 80 million bucks, things change. You never know. I said that before the fight. You make that kind of money, it can change you.”

In summary, McGregor and St-Pierre will be doing their own things in the short-term future. And there’s quite a weight difference between them at the moment.

White has indicated that he’d like to put McGregor up against Tony Ferguson. Assuming he wins this match, then perhaps we can start talking more seriously about a GSP and McGregor fight.

$1 Million Bets Made on Floyd Mayweather to Beat McGregor

mayweather-mcgregor-fightHow good are Floyd Mayweather’s chances of beating Conor McGregor in tonight’s fight? Good enough that multiple $1 million bets are now rolling in on Mayweather leading up to the mega match.

According to ESPN’s Dave Purdum, Vegas sportsbooks reported “multiple $1 million bets” this week.

The MGM took a $1 million wager on “Money” Mayweather at -550 odds from a VIP bettor. Jay Rood, MGM vice president of race and sports, said that the money was wired to the casino cage. The wager would earn the anonymous VIP bettor a $182,000 profit if they’re successful.

William Hill’s Nevada sportsbook also reported receiving a $1.2 million bet on Mayweather at -500 odds. This customer paid cash and stands to win $240,000 in profits.

Million Dollar Bets are Pushing Mayweather’s Odds Back Up

mgm-sportsbookA flurry of betting activity on Conor McGregor briefly pulled Mayweather’s odds under -500 across the sports betting world.

We here at GTBets experienced the same thing because our early week odds were -455 on Mayweather and +335 on McGregor. Here’s how the odds sit going into the fight:

McGregor, Conor +400
Mayweather, Floyd -550

As you can see, we’ve added almost -100 to Money’s odds in the last few days. And some Vegas sportsbooks have put him at -600 lately.

Other Big Bets Reported on Mayweather

mayweather-mcgregor-million-dollar-bets“The price is skyrocketing right now,” Rood told ESPN regarding the dramatic line shifts with Mayweather.

The two $1 million bets are the largest known wagers on the fight to this point. They highlight a sudden surge in betting activity surrounding Mayweather. Aside from the $1 million bets that William Hill and MGM took, they each accepted $300,000 wagers on Money.

The South Point sportsbook reported taking two bets worth “approximately” $200,000 on Mayweather within just 15 minutes of each other.

These came just after somebody wagered $50,000 on McGregor at +450 odds. This would earn the winner a $225,000 profit if McGregor can win.

McGregor still Leading the Action

mcgregor-sparringIt would seem that Mayweather is drawing the majority of the betting action when looking at recent wagers. But sportsbooks are still a long way from closing the gap between McGregor and Mayweather.

William Hill reports that even after the $1.2 million wager on Mayweather, they’d face a “seven-figured liability” if McGregor wins.

Westgate SuperBook told Purdum a different story, though. They said for every bet they received on Money, there were 12 placed on “The Notorious.” However, 76 percent of the money was on Mayweather winning. Going further, the average bet placed on McGregor is worth $212, while the average on Mayweather is $8,036.

Recording Breaking Betting Action

Everybody expected the Mayweather-McGregor fight to be big in terms of betting. But few expected the action to be this extreme.

The numbers have yet to come in from every sportsbook. But it’s estimated that Mayweather-McGregor will easily trump Money’s fight with Manny Pacquiao in May 2015. This match drew a record $60 million in betting action at land-based sportsbooks.

Why All of the Sudden Big Bets on Mayweather?

SPO-BOX-FLOYD-MAYWEATFloyd Mayweather opened this fight as a massive betting favorite. His GTBetst odds were as high as -800 at one point.

But McGregor’s bold predictions and press conference antics have won him plenty of fans since then. And this helped sway some of the betting action his way.

Mayweather’s odds have been dropping steadily ever since. And the $1 million bettors, as well as the $300k bettors, were likely waiting for the lowest possible price.

That came this week, as Money dropped as low as -400 at some sportsbooks. Bettors who waited until this weekend now stand to win twice what they would’ve by betting on Mayweather right away.

Few are expecting anything different than a Mayweather victory tonight. He’s a perfect 49-0 in the boxing ring and has beaten some of the sport’s greatest.

McGregor, on the other hand, has never fought an amateur or professional boxing match. The UFC lightweight and featherweight champion is looking to pull off the biggest upset in boxing history.

McGregor’s long-shot odds are yet another reason why people are willing to bet so big on Mayweather.

Mayweather may Bet $5m on Himself to Beat McGregor

The upcoming Floyd Mayweather Conor McGregor fight has spawned countless bets across the globe. And Mayweather may soon place one of these wagers.

The 40-year-old fighter is thinking of making a $5 million bet on himself beating McGregor. This would be odd because those close to “Money” say that he doesn’t normally wager on his own fighting skills.

According to CBS Sports, Mayweather’s confidence is swelling heading into his August 26 fight with McGregor. He’s currently sitting at -455 odds at GTBets.eu, which would net him a $5.5 million winning bet ($500k profit).

The sheer amount of Mayweather’s bet will boggle the average person’s mind. However, this is a small amount for a guy who’s set to make over $100 million on the bout. And Money is no stranger to living up to his nickname with big sports bets.

Here are a few of his large wagers over the years:

Will Mayweather’s Huge Bet Pay Off?

mayweather-betsOn paper, Money doesn’t have much to fear in this match. He’s a perfect 49-0 in the ring and has beaten some of the best the boxing world has to offer. And he’ll be facing a mixed martial artist who’s never fought a boxing match before.

However, Mayweather has been the most humble of his career leading up to the fight. He claims that his age and lack of ring time since 2015 could hurt him.

Of course, this is all necessary in order to sell pay-per-views. McGregor doesn’t have the boxing skills of Mayweather and has long-shot odds of winning. But this hasn’t stopped people from betting on “The Notorious.” He has +355 odds at GTBets, which are far better than his true chances of stopping Money.

While Mayweather may not publicly state his confidence, he’s showing it in other ways. This includes a week-long party that he’s throwing himself to celebrate his own strip club. The week-long bash shows that Money isn’t exactly worried about his opponent.

The Circus has Quieted

mcgregor-mayweather-torontoMany will remember the 4-stop media tour that McGregor and Mayweather did to promote their fight. It was filled with insults, shenanigans, and plenty of four-letter words. But the most-recent media event inside Ka Theatre at the MGM Grand was anything but a circus.

As Yahoo Sports describes, it was “subdued, sterile and businesslike.” Contrast this to the previous press conferences across Europe and North America, where rowdy crowds watched the fighters rant and rave.

“I think after the reception these guys got, they don’t want fans near this place,” said UFC president Dana White, who’s referring to all of the the wild fans who watch Mayweather and McGregor’s press conferences.

“If I was them, and I got booed off every stage in the planet, I wouldn’t have any fans in here, either.”

The truth is that boxing press conferences are typically quiet in contrast to UFC media exchanges. But it’s still worth noting the difference between the previous and current Mayweather/McGregor press events.

Mayweather is Focused Heading into the Fight

floyd-mayweather-boxingMcGregor has done everything to goad Mayweather into a war of words. He’s also tried to get in his head with bold predictions and taunts about Money’s age.

“I will break this old man,” the 29-year-old McGregor said.

“I don’t see him lasting two rounds. I feel I will have the decision to end it within one.”

He added, “I’m going to [expletive Mayweather] up, make no mistake.”

McGregor tried his best during the recent MGM press conference to get in Mayweather’s head. But these felt like empty words as Money barely reacted. He spent most of the time greeting MGM security guards and talking with his business partner Leonard Ellerbe.

Only members of The Money Team really responded. This included trainer and former Olympian Nate Jones, who yelled to McGregor, “Time to get your ass kicked.”

“Not by you, anyway, you little fool, whoever you are,” McGregor yelled back.

Mayweather quieted Jones and told him to “conduct yourself in an orderly manner.” He clearly wanted to avoid any incidents.

McGregor also jumped in.

“Exactly, tell that [expletive] to shut his mouth,” he said. “Carry yourself with class mate or your paychecks will stop coming.”

Despite the brief exchange with Jones, the Irishman wasn’t rattled overall.

“One of his guys started saying something,” said McGregor. “And I was rising, but whatever. This was a lot more subdued.”

“Was the fans not allowed?” McGregor questioned following the event. “They don’t tell us nothing. I didn’t know what it was going to be. I just roll with it now. It was just media today? I’d like to have known that, but hey, whatever. I enjoyed it.”

Can McGregor Beat Mayweather?

mayweather-mcgregor-odds-boxingAs we covered before, McGregor doesn’t have a great chance to win this fight. But does he have any chance at all?

The Notorious earned his nickname by rattling opponents before UFC matches even began. He was fined $25,000 for a press conference shoving match, has stolen opponents’ title bets, and been ordered to do 25 hours of community service for throwing water bottles at Nate Diaz.

But his attempts to gain a mental edge on Mayweather don’t seem to be working at all.

“I’m going to go out there and do what I do best,” said a modest Mayweather. “Fight, be smart, take my time and be victorious.”

He also explained that McGregor’s taunts have had little effect on him.

“We do this every day at the Mayweather Boxing Club,” Money explained. “Every day we have younger fighters and older fighters with a lot of experience going at it, talking a lot of trash and having fighters being in each other’s ears.”

Mayweather also endured a few more barks from McGregor as they posed face to face for pictures.

But none of this has had an effect. And if Money isn’t thrown off mentally, then he’s very unlikely to lose in the ring.

His boxing skills are unparalleled, given that he’s a master at defense and counterpunching. Every mistake that McGregor makes – and there will be plenty – will be punished by Mayweather’s artful boxing skills.

Aside from some divine miracle, Mayweather should run his record to 50-0 with an easy victory.
